Overview of the Hotel

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Menoreh Hills in Central Java, Amanjiwo is a secluded retreat that offers spectacular views of the UNESCO-listed Borobudur Temple. Designed to evoke the grandeur of ancient Javanese architecture, this resort is all about spiritual calm and cultural immersion. The hotel is built in a circular design to reflect the geometry of Borobudur.

Number and type of rooms

Amanjiwo features 31 suites, all with high ceilings, open-air living spaces and the feeling of being in your own private palace. The Garden Suites come with private terraces and outdoor lounging pavilions, while the Borobudur Pool Suites offer breathtaking views of the temple, alongside private pools. The Dalem Jiwo Suite is the most exclusive, featuring two pavilions, a private butler and a massive swimming pool. We hit the jackpot during our stay, being upgraded to this suite owing to a problem with the first room we were given. Kylie Minogue had been there the week before and we did feel like rockstars, for one night at least!

Do

One of the most unforgettable experiences at Amanjiwo or of any trip was the sunset visit to the Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Buddhist temple compound in the world. Around the central platform are 72 openwork stunning “stupas”, each containing a statue of the Buddha. We explored the temple with a knowledgeable guide, who brought to life the history and spiritual significance of the stone reliefs telling stories from the life and teachings of Buddha.

We also did a fascinating and fun bike tour to the local village, to see villagers crafting objects from wood and also cooking food.
