Anyone who enjoys English wine, country walks and relaxed weekends built around good food and long lunches. It is a particularly good choice for couples looking for a vineyard break that feels informal and easy rather than overly polished or corporate.
Overview of the Hotel
Rathfinny is a 600-acre family-owned wine estate near the pretty village of Alfriston in East Sussex. Surrounded by vines and the rolling landscape of the South Downs National Park, it feels wonderfully rural while remaining an easy weekend escape from London and the south of England. The estate produces Sussex Sparkling wines alongside its Cradle Valley still wines and has become one of the best places in the region to stay, eat and learn more about English winemaking.
Number and type of rooms
The accommodation is at the Flint Barns, a collection of lovingly restored agricultural buildings in the heart of the estate. The old flint walls, tiled roofs and enclosed courtyard give the property plenty of rural character, while the interiors are simple and contemporary. It feels more like a very comfortable country bed and breakfast with a good restaurant than a conventional luxury hotel, which is a large part of its appeal.
Ten en-suite bedrooms, each combining the character of the original farm buildings with clean, understated country interiors. Expect white walls, simple furniture, natural textures and comfortable beds rather than anything too decorative.
Rooms vary slightly in size and layout, reflecting the shape of the historic buildings. The overall style is warm and unfussy, with some rooms like ours having views over the estate.
For families or friends travelling together, Rathfinny Cottage offers a separate self-catering option for up to four guests. It has two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, an open-plan living and dining area and a private courtyard, all within walking distance of the Flint Barns and the estate’s dining options.
Grounds
The setting is the main reason to stay. Vines stretch across the valley, framed by the soft green slopes of the South Downs, with footpaths leading through the estate and surrounding countryside.
Visitors can collect a free trail map from the Cellar Door and follow the estate’s self-guided walking route. The paths are open throughout the year, although this remains a working vineyard and the ground can be uneven. We would allow plenty of time to wander slowly, particularly in the early morning or towards the end of the day when the estate is quieter.
Tours and tastings
A tour and tasting is an essential part of a stay. The seasonal tours begin with a walk through the vineyard, where guides explain how the vines are managed and how the chalky landscape influences the wine. The route then continues through the winery for a behind-the-scenes look at how the grapes become Sussex Sparkling, finishing with a guided tasting of several Rathfinny wines.
Things to do
Beyond the wine tours, the estate is ideal for walking. The self-guided walking route follows the perimeter of the vineyard and provides wide views across the vines, chalk grassland and surrounding hills. Dogs and children are welcome on the trail, although dogs need to remain under control around the working estate.
The Cellar Door shop is also worth visiting before leaving. Located within the winery, it stocks the full range of Rathfinny Sussex Sparkling, Cradle Valley still wines and Seven Sisters spirits, alongside a carefully selected collection of gifts, vouchers and wine-related products. Complimentary drop-in tastings are also offered at the bar.
Rathfinny is also brilliantly placed for exploring the East Sussex coast. The Seven Sisters Country Park is within easy reach and has some of the most dramatic walking in southern England, with rolling chalk cliffs, open grassland and wide sea views. It makes a good contrast to the vineyard, particularly if you combine a morning coastal walk with an afternoon tasting back at the estate.
Dine
The Flint Barns Dining Room is the estate’s main restaurant and sits at the centre of the accommodation. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with seasonal menus based around produce from Sussex and the surrounding region. The food has the generous feel of a very good country pub, but with the obvious advantage of a wine list drawn from the estate around you.
Dinner is served on selected evenings, alongside Sunday lunches and seasonal outdoor events. Recent menus have included Sussex beef, South Coast fish, local vegetables and dishes cooked over coals, with Rathfinny wines also a main attraction, of course!
During summer, Rathfinny also offers vineyard picnics. These are prepared in advance and include sandwiches, sausage rolls, salads, local snacks and dessert, with vegetarian and children’s versions available. They are particularly popular and need to be booked ahead.
Drink
The Hut is Rathfinny’s informal outdoor wine bar, overlooking the vines. It is open to walk-in visitors and serves the estate’s Sussex Sparkling and Cradle Valley wines by the glass or bottle, alongside coffee, cakes and light plates such as a Sussex Ploughman’s, cheese, smoked salmon pâté and scones.
It is exactly the sort of place where a quick glass can easily turn into a long afternoon! Order a bottle, find a table outside and enjoy the view across the estate. There is no need to book, although it can become busy during warm weekends.
Why stay
Rathfinny works because the wine, food and landscape all feel part of the same experience. You can wake among the vines, walk through the estate, learn how the wine is made and then drink it with dinner a few metres from where the grapes were grown. And staying at The Flint Barns means there’s no need to drive home, so you can fully indulge if you wish!
