A stay at {LES ROCHES ROUGES}: St Rafael

A sun-soaked, contemporary Riviera seaside stay

Who would love it

A dream stay for contemporary design lovers who prefer their French Riviera understated rather than flashy.

Overview of the Hotel

Les Roches Rouges sits right on the water near Saint-Raphaël, with the Mediterranean stretching out directly in front of it. Originally built in the 1950s, the hotel has been carefully restored in a staying true to its mid-century modernist roots. The look is crisp and minimal: concrete, pale stone, white walls and large windows designed to frame the sea.

Number and type of rooms

The hotel has 50 rooms and suites, all facing the sea. Rooms range from entry-level Sea View Rooms to larger Junior Suites and Suites with terraces. Decor is calm and colourful with lots of wood and linen. Many rooms have balconies or terraces that make the most of the stunning views. Suites offer more space and seating areas, but the approach is consistent throughout: contemporary, nautically inspired styling with the Mediterranean right outside.

Setting

Unlike many Riviera hotels, there’s no formal garden or manicured lawns here. Instead, the “grounds” are all about the rocky shoreline and the way the building sits directly above the sea. Two saltwater pools are carved into the rocks, creating natural-feeling swimming spots that blend seamlessly with the landscape. Sun loungers are arranged simply, leaving the setting to speak for itself.

Dine & Drink

Dining is one of the highlights at Les Roches Rouges. With several options.

Estelo – Mediterranean terrace dining
Estelo is the hotel’s principal restaurant. Perched just above the waves on a terrace with sweeping views of the Mediterranean, it serves generous, colourful Provençal and Mediterranean cuisine that feels perfectly suited to the Côte d’Azur setting. Fresh fish arrives from the local market and is paired with vibrant vegetables, olive oil and herbs, and dishes are designed for sharing in the easy rhythm of seaside meals.

It’s also the setting for breakfast. The buffet offers fruits brimming with Mediterranean sunshine, fresh pastries, cheeses, eggs made to order and more

Récif – fine dining with views to die
Set on a lovely terrace overlooking the sea, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant is led by Chef Alexandre Baule. The focus is on beautifully sourced fish and seafood, alongside meat from the surrounding hinterland, treated with care and precision. Dishes are refined and inventive. Dinner unfolds as the sun sets and the light fades, with the sea below.

La Chicoula – Guinguette under the pines
For a more casual midday or afternoon bite, La Chicoula sits beneath the pine trees, embracing the “guinguette” spirit so intrinsic to the South of France. It’s a breezy, informal spot where you’ll find focaccias, salads, small bites and refreshing plates. It’s also a great spot for sundowners before dinner.

Sport and Gym

Unlike many Riviera hotels, there’s no formal garden or manicured lawns here. Instead, the “grounds” are all about the rocky shoreline and the way the building sits directly above the sea. Two saltwater pools are carved into the rocks, creating natural-feeling swimming spots that blend seamlessly with the landscape. Sun loungers are arranged simply, leaving the setting to speak for itself.
