Who would love it
People looking for a chic, cosy country hotel close to Paris, who want the “quiet luxury” the Fontenille Collection does so well rather than stuffy, dusty old-world style.
Overview of the Hotel
La Domaine de Primard is an 18th-century estate on the banks of the Eure, about an hour west of Paris, close to Giverny. Part château, part contemporary country hotel, it feels more like a private house than a formal grand stay.
Inside, the mood is cosy-country but clean and contemporary. It’s more “beautiful, chic family home” than the formal old-worldy, slightly dusty style we used to associate Relais Château hotels with (La Domaine de Primard is part of the group). There are several sitting rooms with parquet floors and antique fireplaces where you can hang out, reading a book or playing games.
Number and type of rooms
There are 39 rooms and suites spread across the château and the surrounding outbuildings. Entry-level rooms are the Classic and Superior categories, which are cosy but well thought through, with comfortable beds and views over the gardens or river. Deluxe Rooms offer more space and better views, while the Junior Suites and Suites feel more like small apartments, some with separate sitting areas. The look throughout is calm and contemporary, with muted tones, good bathrooms and large windows that make the most of the setting.
Grounds
The grounds are a big part of the appeal. Landscaped gardens roll down to the river, with terraces, lawns, lakes and farmland beyond. There are plenty of quiet corners to wander or sit, and it’s easy to lose an afternoon just walking the paths or watching the light change over the water. Everything feels well kept but not over-designed.
Dine
There are multiple options for dining at the Domaine. So, for our weekend stay we were happy to stay on site for our meals.
Bistrot Martin is more relaxed and open throughout the day, with a brighter, informal feel. In good weather tables spill outside. Breakfast is generous and well done, while lunch focuses on simple, comforting dishes that suit the pace of a country weekend.
The table d’hôtes is a cosy room with an open fire where the hotel lays out a generous “goûter” at 4pm, a proper French country-house ritual! It’s a relaxed spread with homemade cakes, pastries, cookies and hot drinks. It’s a perfect treat after a walk around the grounds or some time at the spa.
In winter, the table d’hôtes hosts raclette nights that are all about warmth and conviviality. Melted raclette cheese served straight to the table alongside potatoes, charcuterie and pickles. It’s deliberately unfussy and designed to be shared, encouraging guests to linger and talk rather than rush through a meal. It’s exactly the kind of dinner that suits Primard: relaxed, generous and quietly joyful!
Les Chemins is the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant. The room is elegant but unfussy, with views out to the gardens and a quiet, grown-up atmosphere. The cooking is seasonal and precise, drawing heavily on produce from the estate’s kitchen garden. There is a 5 or 7 course set menu.
Drink
The Salon Bar is set within the château’s sitting rooms. Parquet floors, antique fireplaces and comfortable sofas make it an easy place for a pre-dinner cocktail or a nightcap. Drinks are classic and well made.
Spa
The Susanne Kaufmann spa is calm, modern and very much in keeping with the rest of the property. Facilities include treatment rooms, plus a sauna and steam room. The latter can only take 4 people so be sure to book your slot! We has some of the best massages in a long time, leaving us feeling very relaxed!
Sport and Gym
There is a small gym, bikes to borrow for exploring the surrounding countryside and plenty of space outdoors for walking or light exercise. There are also padel and tennis courts plus an outdoor pool that is heated in the spring and summer months.
Price
Rooms typically start from around €350 per night for entry-level categories, rising to €600+ per night for suites, based on published 2026 prices.
